First, what is a moisturizer?
What’s the purpose of a cream based moisturizer when you can just use a leave-in conditioner or oil? Well, the main goal of a moisturizer is to attract and retain moisture. For those with really dry hair, a leave-in conditioner is just not enough. The cream helps coat every strand and deliver moisture deep into the cortex.
You want a moisturizer that not only attracts moisture but also keeps it in. Everyone knows that ultimate moisturizer is water itself so water or a water-based ingredient should be close to or at the very top of the ingredients list.
Let’s look at our Dulce Hydrating Curl Lotion.
You can see that at the top is Aloe Vera Juice. The Aloe Vera plant is made up of 99.5% water. The Dulce Hydrating Curl Lotion also contains Kokum Butter which is obtained from the exotic Indian fruit tree that increases hair elasticity to avoid breakage and Argan Oil which revives dull, dry hair, reduces frizz and enhances elasticity.
Dulce is an excellent lightweight lotion made specifically for Curly and Wavy hair types although, we have seen many kinky girls out there that love it. If you follow the LOC Method and like using a heavy oil or cream based leave-in, then you might prefer a more lightweight hair moisturizer like Dulce. It also helps define your natural curl pattern and smells like sweet watermelon!
Next is our Moisture Rich Hair Parfait.
We recommend our Moisture Rich Hair Parfait for both Kinky and Curly girls, but it is more “lightweight” than our Shea Yogurt Hair Moisturizer which we will talk more about later. They have a lot of the same key ingredients, but the main difference is the Prunus Armeniaca (Aprikot) or Kernel oil. Kernel oil has the ability penetrate the hair shaft, repairing and locking moisture deep inside. It is also known to help with hair growth, strengthening, and adding thickness to your hair.
Lastly, Our Shea Yogurt Hair Moisturizer
As the name suggests, Shea Yogurt Hair Moisturizer’s main ingredient is Raw Shea Butter. We recommend it to Kinky girls because it was made specifically for Type 4 hair, but there are also plenty of Curly girls who can’t get enough of it. One key ingredient is Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil. Sweet Almond Oil is an emulsifier which means it can bring together two or more liquids that are normally unmixable or unblendable, like oil and water. That’s why it’s so good as the third step on the LOC Method, bringing oil and water together to add layers of moisture protection to your hair.
The Bottom Line
If you’re looking for a lightweight moisturizer that will still do its job and help define your curls then go for the Dulce Hydrating Curl Lotion.
If you don’t like the heaviness of Shea Butter but still need a super hydrating moisturizer opt for our Moisture Rich Hair Parfait.
If your hair is always THIRSTING for moisture, then you need the Shea Yogurt Hair Moisturizer.
